ELIZABETH JANE, LADY WATERPARK: diary and photograph album; 1865-1891 (1865-1891)

1865-1891

LADY WATERPARK. Vol. I. Lady Waterpark's diary as Lady in Waiting to Queen Victoria; 1865-1891. Also included are records of occasional attendances on the Queen, May 1892 - July 1893, copied from her original diary by Lady Waterpark and her daughter Susan Cavendish, with annotations by a descendant, Joan Tanner. The diary contains brief records of Lady Waterpark's attendance at Windsor, Osborne and Balmoral and of the Queen's movements, together with lists of the latters's visitors, during that time. The similarity between the entries written by Susan Cavendish and those written by her mother suggests that little, if any, material has been omitted in the transcription. The diary also includes copies of correspondence apparently unpublished, between Lady Waterpark and her daughter and the Queen, her officials and others, 1863-1894, including copies of twenty-nine letters and telegrams from the Queen and of two letters from Princess Beatrice. These are apparently only a selection from letters originally in Lady Waterpark's possession. Some letters have been edited. Some refer to Lady Waterpark's appointment as Lady in Waiting (1863-1864) and one letter from the Queen refers to Lord Beaconsfield's death (19 April 1881). A later note by Susan Cavendish describes an audience with the Queen in November 1898, while at the end of the volume is a telegram sent by Queen Victoria to Lady Waterpark's grand-daughter Maude Okeover, formerly a Maid of Honour, on her marriage to Sir Andrew Barclay Walker, Bart., 11 October 1887. The diary also contains a list of owners (1894-1971) on the title page. LADY WATERPARK. Vol. II. Lady Waterpark's photograph album, containing photographs of members of the Royal Family ; [before Dec. 1861] - 1867, n.d. Included are photographs of the Queen and Prince Albert, of the Princesses Alice, Helena, Louise and Beatrice, the Princes Arthur, Duke of Connaught and Christian of Schleswig-Holstein and of John Brown. ff. 13. 260 x 208mm.
